Music Lessons - The Influence Of Blues Guitar On Modern Music

By Aikednea Johansen

Anybody interested in modern music eventually asks the question, "Where did it begin?" Well, if you leave blues guitar music out, you won't have a lot of an answer. So let us look at where the blues came from, where it went and who it met along the way. We will also have a look at the "blues guitar sound" and how it has its unique effect on our feelings.

The blues as a musical phenomenon started around 1911 when W.C. Handy published popular songs, notably "Memphis Blues" and "St Louis Blues", which impacted the hearts and souls of the black people. By the nineteen twenties, the general population were beginning to hear this new music through its influence on jazz. Early blues singers such as Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday sang with jazz bands while others played with "jug bands" accompanied by fiddle, kazoo and washboard.

Of course to people like W. C. Handy who were brought up singing in church, the piano was the natural instrumental accompaniment to their songs. But the guitar is portable and always was popular thus it needed a place in blues and jazz. Blues guitar players like twelve string guitarist Leadbelly and future electric guitar player B.B. King were making sure the guitar would be an integral part of the blues. Other blues guitarists made their living in smoky saloons playing slide guitar utilizing a bottle neck or the blade of a knife to fret the notes.

After the Second World War, young artists like Elvis Presley and Bill Haley were wrapping the blues in a new package called "rock'n'roll" and the players of the electric blues guitar like B.B. King were heralding the arrival of the lead guitar, soon to be a great attraction for both musicians and audiences. Throughout the evolution of the blues the guitar had always taken its turn for solos in jazz bands but now it competed with the singer for the attention of the audience.

Blues guitar can be played in any key which takes your fancy and is available in 3 basic forms: eight bars, for instance "Heartbreak Hotel", sixteen bars like "Saint James Infirmary" and twelve bars like "St. Louis Blues". For some reason, the twelve bar blues form is way more singer-friendly and popular with audiences than the other two, and it is the basis of numerous great songs outside the blues idiom.

If you go poking around the internet you'll find that the blues scales are just your garden variety major and minor scales except that the third, fifth and seventh notes are played flat. However, you might be amazed to learn that blues players managed for centuries without knowing about European musical theory. They learnt to sing and play from their families and friends just as many of the young white blues players of the nineteen sixties learnt from imitating the artists they heard on records.

And this is where the blues takes another direction. After years of imitating their idols something odd happened to the white blues guitar players in Britain and the Usa. They developed their own authentic, original styles. The older blues players even started using the new arrangements of classic songs and adopting a few of the unbluesy musical innovations introduced by young white guitarists like Eric Clapton. So the beat goes on. A foreign culture influences American popular music and in turn gets fresh input from a new generation of guitar players from all over the world.

Work of the movie camera man

By Chris Snyder

A cameraman has a lot of work to do on set. Directing the Gaffer as to where to put the lights and creating that perfect lighting is just one task and being able to think up new angles and camera movements freely is the most fun part of the job. Getting to see your final work on the big screen can be a whole new magical experience, totally separate from those on set.

Seeing your audience reacting how you wanted them can also be somewhat over-powering. When the audience reciprocates how you intended after watching your work, a feeling of achievement comes alive inside. All the hard work dedicated to bringing a production alive is well worth it when it is mastered.

To be a cameraman means that you have to creatively design a picture in the frame-which is incredibly difficult if you think about all the aspects in the shot that have to become unified-lights, props, the whole ambiance of the shot, have to be captured appropriately. To be able to unify all these elements takes a well-trained eye and good, creative vision.

Movement is also very important because without camera movement, the shots become boring and it's more apparent that you're watching a movie. Jerky or unstable movements ruin your shot and kill the moment, hence why a cameraman must also be in shape-to be able to hold shots for long takes if it's hand-held or on a Steadicam system.

It's always a good idea to thoroughly check every piece of camera equipment you rent to make sure it works the way it's supposed to. Camera equipment tends to be on the heavy side-especially equipment rented from such large places like Panavision or Arri-so it's a good idea to stay in shape and lift weights so you can move all the heavy cases of camera equipment as fast and carefully as possible. Working in the crew on set requires that you are able to move quickly without hurting yourself or others on set.

Getting your "foot in the door" as a cameraman (or any crew member for that matter) is incredibly hard and requires a lot of time, persistence and ambition. Being able to operate and put together numerous cameras is an important skill to acquire in your camera career as well so you can be quick and efficient getting ready to shoot every day of the production. Lagging is bad in production work because there is never any time to waste. The quicker and more efficient you are at putting cameras together and operating them, the more jobs you'll attain.

Creativity and perseverance are key in this industry. The more creative, outspoken and efficient you are, the more people are going to want to work with you. Knowledge of the cameras you work with is also key, as you should know at least a little bit about all cameras currently in the industry.

Half of the game is just meeting other camera people and networking. The Head Prop Master for Warner Bros. once told me, "In this industry, it's good to be nice to everyone because you never know when you may need someone even like a plumber. What if one of the toilets on set break onE day? You'll know whom to call, and he might even give you a discount! Happened to me!"

Music Lessons: Besame Mucho - Guitar Chords And Lyrics

By Fiona Clarkson

Besame Mucho is one of the most popular songs of all time, being recorded by an extraordinarily diverse array of singers and instrumentalists.

It was written in 1940 by a 16-year-old Mexican girl called Consuelo Velasquez. The song was a steamy expression of a young girl's desire to be kissed. The title of the song means "kiss me alot" and it stirred the imaginations of women and men all over the world. In 1944, a young American singer named Kitty Kallen sang the song with Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra and it stayed for six weeks on the charts of Billboard Magazine.

One more key figure in the story of Besame Mucho is Sunny Skylar, composer and arranger who sang with big bands in the nineteen forties. He wrote music and lyrics for many famous songs including: Amor, And So To Sleep Again and Love Me With All your Heart. There are some other translations of the song but Skylar's appears to be a favorite. Right here are the lyrics as interpreted by Sunny Skylar:

Bsame, bsame mucho Each time I cling to your kiss, I hear music divine Bsame mucho Hold me my darling and say that you'll always be mine This joy is something new My arms enfolding you Never knew this thrill before Whoever thought I'd be Holding you close to me Whispering "It's you I adore" Dearest one If you should leave me Each little dream would take wing, and my life would be through Bsame mucho Love me forever and make all my dreams come true

During the time of writing the song, Consuelo was adamant she had never been kissed but she certainly seems like she knew what she wanted. I think Skylar was smart in not translating the words "besane mucho" into literal English such as "kiss me much" or "kiss me alot".

Only to get the feel of the song, the following are Consuelo's original words: And here are the original lyrics by Consuelo Velazquez: Bsame, bsame mucho Como si fuera esta noche la ltima vez Bsame mucho Que tengo miedo perderte, perderte otra vez Quiero tenerte muy Cerca, mirarme en tus Ojos, verte junto a m Piensa que tal vez Maana yo ya estar Lejos, muy lejos de ti Bsame, bsame mucho Como si fuera esta noche la ltima vez Bsame mucho Que tengo miedo perderte, perderte despus

If you're a guitar player and you know how to play the A minor, D minor, A major and E major chords, you'll easily be able to play Besame Mucho.

Regarding the composer of the song, she was meant to have been a classical concert pianist having learnt the piano when she was 4 years old. Consuelo wrote many other famous Mexican songs such as: Amar y vivir, Verdad amarga, Franqueza, Que seas feliz, Cachito and Enamorada.

The list of vocal and instrumental artists who have recorded Besame Mucho goes on and on. A few noteworthy ones are: Andrea Bocelli, Artie Shaw, The Beatles, Charles Aznavour, Chris Isaak, Edith Piaf, The Dead Brothers, Leslie Nielsen(!!), Sammy Davis Jr and Stan Getz.

For lovers of acoustic guitar, Besame Mucho is covered on an album of latin standards by flamenco guitarist, Paco de Lucia. Other tracks on the CD consist of: Malaguena, Mantilla De Feria, Granada, Manha De Carnaval, Perfidia, La Virgen De La Macarena and Moliendo Cafe. Paco is one of the world's greatest guitarists and it will be well worth your while to have a listen to this exceptional CD. Meanwhile, good luck with your own efforts at playing this luscious song.
