One of the most famous and well-loved ballets ever performed is Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. With its magical and melodic score this ballet is an enduring Christmastime favorite. The plot revolves around the dream of young girl Clara whose godfather is the maker of the most magical toys. Set at Christmas-time, Clara has a dream that her toys come to life and this beautiful ballet is a visualization of that dream. The Nutcracker has been staged many times with notable versions being choreographed by Mikhail Baryshnikov and Rudolph Nureyev.

Swan Lake is another ballet that uses the melodic music of Tchaikovsky. The plot sees Prince Siegfried meeting and falling in love with beautiful princess Odette who has been turned into a swan by an evil magician. She is only allowed into her human form at night and the love of a virgin prince is only able to break the spell. The play ends in tragedy with both characters dying but the two are beautifully reunited in the afterlife.

Franz is engaged to Swanhilda who realizes that Copplia is in fact a doll made by an eccentric inventor. Swanhilda impersonates Copplia to win back the love of Franz and after some confusion harmony is restored in this enchanting ballet.
