An Analysis Of The ZZ Top Discography And Band History

By Chris Channing

Those who are not interested in blues and rock history should still note that ZZ Top has made a big influence on the industry. The band has published a multitude of books, made a cameo in several videos and movies, and even has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The band is originally from Texas, where they started out by merging two local bands. Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard quickly put out their first album. Being modest folk, the album was named "ZZ Top's First Album" and went on to become a popular album even today. Although it didn't reach them the fame they would earn later, it was a good starting point.

Some have noted that it is funny that Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill both have long beards, yet Frank Beard does not. Even funnier is how the beards got started. The band was on a short break, during which both members decided to grow out their beard with no idea that the other was doing the same thing. Even to this day the beards have continued to grow, while Frank Beard has always kept clean shaved or had a mustache.

Texas couldn't contain the music might that is ZZ Top for long. The band continued to released several more albums, all of which were moderately successful. ZZ Top continued to ride the wave of success to get global appeal. Although not at their peak, the next few albums would be the driving force that put the three in range of the top. This includes albums such as Tres Hombres and Rio Grande Mud, which were both great albums that are relevant even today. Their biggest success was still yet to come, however.

ZZ Top broke into the music video scene with Eliminator, one of their most popular albums. Music videos at the time were still fairly new, and the MTV network was still fresh in its infancy. Videos for the singles "Legs" and "Sharp Dressed Man" did extremely well in the charts. In fact, the album as a whole was a smash hit all around the world. The band would find it hard to keep up the success of this album, and some say this was ZZ Top at their best.

All good things can not last. This is a rule that ZZ Top learned well when the 1990's came about. They tried to stay current by offering new and old flavored musical styles, but to no avail. It seemed they couldn't stay on top of their success and eventually was passed out of the eye of the public and considered to be washed up.

In Conclusion

The number of albums and singles ZZ Top has created over the past few decades is staggering. No one can match the amount of work that they have put into creating a new blues and rock industry in America, although they can surely try. - 42265
