Celebrity, Men and the World of Fashion

By Shannon Holland

Men's fashion is becoming a huge part of the fashion world, and gaining as much interest - but do men wish to emulate male celebrity looks in the same way that females hang on every fashion choice of their favourite stars? Let us take a look at the beginnings of male celebrity fashion icons that brought us to the world of male celebrity best-dressed lists...

The old image of the alpha male has been replaced in the last decade by the idea of the metrosexual, which has had an obvious influence on male fashion. A man who cares about his grooming, buys hair products and chooses to take pride in his fashion choices - only being gently mocked instead of ridiculed by his mates - is a metrosexual man, and it seems he is here to stay.

David Beckham was a turning point in Britain for many men - with his diamond earrings and carefully put together style, men across the nation began requesting his hairstyles and getting their ears pierced. It was all of a sudden acceptable for men to want to look like other men and for them to admire what celebrity males were wearing.

It is obvious that male style icons represent some of the attributes ordinary men wish to possess, in the same way that women lust over the outfits of the most beautiful and successful actresses. Football, long seen as a man's sport, is producing stars that have influenced fashion very obviously - and the men making the top of the best-dressed lists are those who are making the most money and have the most successful careers.

It is obvious that more and more men are starting to look towards male celebrities in terms of fashion inspiration than they ever have before. Male celebrities are becoming icons in terms of their fashion, whether it is because it is seen as acceptable that men now care about what they're wearing or whether consumerist desire is taking a hold of the men's fashion world like having the fastest sports car or having the flashiest gadget.
