Should I Buy a Hand Made Guitar?

By Scott Scothern

If you are in the marker for a new guitar, you will discover that you have a number of options. One is to buy your guitar from a local music store, which offers many brands and models, from inexpensive to expensive. Another option is to buy a custom guitar built for you by a Luthier, or guitar maker.

You also are looking for something really special, that just fits you, but you know that if you buy a particular model that is it is not really unique. Chances are hundreds, if not thousands, of other people probably have that model too. So, how do you find a truly unique personalized guitar?

If any of the above sounds like what you are looking for then you should check out getting a handmade guitar. A handmade guitar is usually built with quality and your specific needs in mind. It might be more expensive, but it will be as good or better than the high end instruments you have been playing a the music store and will be unique.

Most custom guitar makers will meet with you when you contact them. They will sit down you or correspond with you and guide you through the many choices of woods, decorative trim, and options available. They will help you come up with your dream guitar.

You can have your guitar personalized. Would you like some special inlay on the fret board or your initials? Most Luthiers will do this, sometimes included in the price of the guitar.

Luthiers are able to spend the time and attention to bringing out the best sound in the woods of your guitar. He knows how to optimize the sound of your guitar or focus on the sound you may want, like extra sustain, volume, or highs and lows.

If you have small hands, he can make the neck a little narrower, or make the radius (back of the neck profile) a little less thick to make it more comfortable. If you are in the market for a good quality unique guitar check out custom guitars.
