Beware Of Prohibited Downloading Landing You In Court

By Geoff James

The music corporation was slow to catch on to the significance of downloading. File sharing sites appeared which got quite large incredibly rapidly. Ultimately the industry faced the situation & began forcefully going after both websites and individuals through the courts. After all it is stealing of intellectual property. The business decided on a course of aggressive and well-publicised court cases as well as lobbying the legislators in the corridors of power.

Undoubtedly you'll have read about some of the lawsuits recently. After all chasing an individual single mother for over $100,000 is always going to interest the media, especially when they have been well briefed. The aim of this twin-pronged attack seems to be to intimidate both people & sites thus reducing the activity. Even though it does seem very heavy handed.

Fortunately alongside this approach the music giants realised they had to get into the download market & try to make up for the fall in album & CD sales. The innovators were Apple, who created a system that was simple to use & inexpensive for even the most technophobic. At the same time the approach of giving away something for free to increase sales was recognised & implemented. Many more people listened to music they would not usually find, liked it & thus went out to find more & spend some cash

Action is being taken but is the twin approach achieving success? It seems to be up to a point. Although sales of CD's have dropped along with record companies profits, the number of people seeing live music is increasing. So bands are able to combat the falling royalties from CD sales with money from live gigs.

Record companies have to change the way they look for talent. They are looking at the social media sites and hunting out popular bands & individuals with many downloads. With people already listening to the music it is pretty certain the band will be successful & make money

So avoid illegal downloads, enjoy the huge range of music available on the web & seeing bands live.
