An Introduction To Singing High: How To Sing With A Fuller Vocal Range

By Josh Johnson

The key to increasing your vocal range is exercising your vocal cords. Warm ups are important for singers just like stretching is important for athletes. The more you practice, the fuller your voice can be. Not only will this help you learn singing high with a full vocal range, but it will also help you avoid damaging your voice.

It is best to start your warm up with breath support because you require more breath for high notes than low notes. Especially before you sing for a long time like in a rehearsal. When you sing your exercises start low and gradually build to higher tones. You can also use a hummng sound or make a buzz sound with your lips as this forces you to use more breath.

One great warm up for your breathing is by humming or buzzing your lips together like blowing a rasberry while you sing. This practice makes you breath more strongly into the note. However, if you try too much too fast you could strain your vocal cords and cause more damage. Regular warm ups will prevent this from happening.

Vocal warm ups can be sung on "la" or any other syllable. Do not try to sing something uncomfortably high straight off, or you may damage your vocal cords. They can also be sung using the buzz or lip roll to warm up your breath support. There is a vocal warm up that is sung on each note of the scale all the way up to your highest point of your range by singing the Solfege.

Next you want to develop your upper resonance or head voice. This is where you feel your voice is vibarting in your soft palate, sinuses and forehead. Some vocal exercises for this are sung in intervals like one, three, five, three, one up the scale to your highest point. You can also start high and work your way lower. Another warm up that helps your higher range is to make a sighing noise called a yawn-slide starting from very high and then get lower. Do this over and over again for a few times.

These exercises are just of few of many. There are many different versions of vocal warm ups for singers of all ranges. The best way to increase your vocal ranges is by practicing every day, especially before you sing for a long period of time.
