Car Speakers - Different Kinds

By Pat Jackson

Coaxial Car Speaker System The most common type of speakers called coaxial speakers. Normally, most manufacturers include at least one pair of coaxial speakers in their models. Coaxial speakers are available in 2-way, 3-way speakers and 4-way, depending on their configuration or to be more number of tweeters in the system.

The simplest version of coaxial speakers, the kind you usually find in older cars have midrange woofers can produce sounds between. But the latest versions will also include at least one tweeter for reproducing high frequencies. A tweeter is a device that allows your system to reproduce high frequency sounds, minimize distortion and provide a more clear and more defined.

An increase in the number of tweeters will add more details to the sound. So while two way coaxial car speakers have one tweeter, three way speakers would include two tweeters and so on.

Many car manufacturers talk about the amazing effects of the 6 piece car speaker system in their models. But essentially this system just includes 4 mid range woofers with 2 detached tweeters and this is what you would get normally as well when you buy a car. So, if you are being charged extra for this you know you are being cheated.

Component Car Speaker System A component car speaker system comprises of mid-range woofers, tweeters and cross over filter networks. However, the tweeter in the component car speaker system is separate with the cross over filters added for increased sound clarity. The filters channel sounds that are component specific that is only a sound range that can be handled by a specific component is channeled to it. For example, only high frequency sounds will be channeled to the tweeters that are capable of handling them while the low frequency sounds are channeled to the mid-range woofers. This significantly improves the sound quality by minimizing disruptions and distortions.

If I were to compare the two systems, car speakers, namely, coaxial cables and components, in terms of price, component speaker systems are much more expensive car speaker. But the best sound quality for increased costs are worth it. In general, a car speaker of three components as the speaker system is more than enough to produce impressive sound quality. Like most new cars are equipped with speakers installed before installing, you can check whether you have the cross on the filters.

The material of the car speaker components is of equal importance if you want the speakers to last for long. Usually cones are either made of the thinner materials like cloth or paper or they are made of denser materials like glass, fiber, Kevlar or polypropylene. However, it would be incorrect to suggest that the material of the cone is the only thing responsible for better sound quality. The quality of the sound produced by the car speakers depends more on the entire assembly that includes the magnet size, voice coil type etc.

As far as surrounding material for your car speakers is concerned it is best to go for denser material since the cheaper varieties usually use foam that cracks easily when subjected to temperature variations.
