Free Acoustic Guitar Lessons

By David Lambert

These lessens are a free resource to the expert guitar player who wishes to just get a certain amount of the rust off their style, all the way to the very novice guitar player who wants to start out playing the fundamentals precisely. I have been playing guitar for over 40 years and was a guitar instructor for 15 of those years.

You will be able to obtain a great deal of lesson materials on this site. The two major acoustic guitar picking styles that will be covered are Flatpicking Guitar and Fingerstyle Guitar.

Lessons for Flatpick Acoustic Guitar:
Flatpicking is a style that is customary for the most part to Bluegrass guitar players. It is also known as plectrum picking. We will cover subjects like right and left hand location, how to position the pick, how to play efficiently and much more.

We will also go into detail about the left hand techniques, such as hand and finger placements, how to finger notes the best way, forming and changing between chords very quickly and much more. These basic methods may seem unnecessary, but if you don't start out right with the fundamentals, you practicing abilities will suffer a great deal. Proper practicing technique and strict discipline are the key elements you need to concentrate on to become an exceptional player.

TAB or tablature is a subject that we will cover in detail. TAB or tablature is the musician's shorthand for those of us who cannot read standard notation. Ornamental notes will be covered as well.

These are typically known as hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, bends and harmonics for your learning pleasure. These ornamental techniques are often considered intermediate or even advanced level of guitar practicing, but it is important that you master them.

Last and certainly not least, we will analyze some actual TAB's in real detail to teach you the same techniques that flatpicking artist's such as Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Doc Watson, and many others use. Want to progress from an ordinary player to a master flatpicker? Just pursue these examples and you will observe that your playing skills improve at an amazing pace.

Acoustic Guitar Lessons - Fingerstyle Guitar:
Fingerstyle guitar got it's start from ragtime music, whereby the guitarists tried to duplicate the ragtime piano of the period. Contemporary artist's such as Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and Merle Travis took this style and enhanced it even more.

This tends to be a somewhat challenging method of perfroming the guitar, but it gives a enormous amount of satisfaction to the performer and the listener alike.

I advise that you know your way around the flatpicking guitar style before you attempt to master fingerstyle guitar. It will make your transition into the fingerstyle technique much smoother. By acquiring flatpicking first, you will gradually go through basic guitar methods such as left hand strategies, speed training, the mastery of ornamental techniques and more. Learning scales, positions and notes of the fretboard will also benefit you greatly, prior to moving on to fingerstyle guitar.

By starting out with basic techniques and exercises, you will gain self-confidence, which will propel you into more advanced lesson materials. We will concentrate on the right hand strategies, as that is the greatest departure from flatpicking style guitar.

Also left hand differences will be covered with regards to chord forms and more. Next comes the development of your own distinctive style of fingerstyle guitar. We will take actual song samples, pull them apart and examine why certain methods are used and you will develop a clearer understanding of this style.

Sample breaks will be studied through a number of of the most famous fingerstyle guitarists such as, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and more. We can gain from the understanding of these masters of fingerstyle guitar. You can start to build your own individual style through analyzing these breaks.

If you could faithfully play one of Chet Atkins riffs, you would sound very very impressive. But, if you make it uniquely your own arrangement, based on one of the masters licks - that's even better! Our lessons will cover how you can do that.
